Fees vary depending on level of experience and how specialised the area of nutrition is. For example all dietitians learn about weight management at university but certain dietitians develop additional skills after graduation and attend specialty conferences to ensure the most up to date strategies and methods. An initial consultation with such a professional would last 45 minutes or more and a typical fee to expect would be from $177. Review consultations may be 15-30 minutes with a typical fee from $87. Lower fees could be expected for less experienced or less specialised knowledge.
All Accredited Practising Dietitians are also Nutritionists. Dietitians undergo additional training in the application of nutritional concepts in health facilities and gain additional skills in treating illness as well as promoting and protecting health.
The recognised credential in Australia is Accredited Practising Dietitian or Accredited Nutritionist. These titles are recognised by the Dietitians Association of Australia. Some dietitians are Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitians which identifies them as being leaders within the profession.
All Accredited Sports Dietitians are also Accredited Practising Dietitians who have undergone additional training in the field of sporting performance.
Medicare offers a scheme called Enhanced Primary Care which assists those with a chronic health condition that requires multidisciplinary care, that is, support and assistance from several health practitioners. It is the role of the General Practitioner to determine eligibility. Qualifying individuals receive referral to specific allied health practitioners and may access a Medicare rebate for a number of visits per calendar year. The first step is to consult your Doctor and ask about a care plan assessment. Your Doctor will engage with you to consider all your health issues, plan an approach and set priorities and targets.
We would recommend reviewing the HICAPS list where you can check if your health fund is covered.
